The Launch photo album

Here are the photos that were taken during the launch. This is the commented archive. There are more photos here

Beware: this is a huge archive, it takes about 552 seconds over 28.8 kbps connections.

The first thing we had to do was to lay everything in the ground. In this photo, Carlos is connecting some wires.
Behind Pedro, you can see the radar reflectors aligned.

He is holding Icarus' guts.

Carlos and Pedro inserting the lid in the box. It is a delicate operation. Notice the helium bottle in the background.
Rui is weighting Icarus to find out how much water he should put in the bottle.
When the balloon equilibrates the bottle of water, that means is has the right amount of helium.

Pedro and Rui and filling the balloon.

Rui is attaching the autonomous system that punctures the balloon. The teachers (Pedro Brogueira,in the baby's hat and Luis Melo, the bald one) are controlling the process.
This photo was taken a few moments before the lift off.

It's that a beauty?

Notice the balloon, the top radar reflector, the parachute, the bottom reflector and Icarus (still inside a box)

This was a moment of great excitement.

There it goes, free as a bird.

You must be curious of what happened after the launch. Well, we downloaded the wrong program to Icarus, so it separated from the balloon too late. It descended slowly and was dragged by the wind. The program in Icarus also wouldn't send the tracking message... We never found it. We're still hoping someone finds it and returns it to us. It had this message attached:
